The Queenstown Trail meanders around the Whakatipu Basin, connecting Queenstown with Arrowtown and the Gibbston Wine Valley

Queenstown Gardens E-Bikes
Kawarau and Remarkables
Lisa & Steve River Shot 1.5MB

Travel by bike through this majestic glacially-carved landscape on gentle gravel trails. Ride alongside rivers and lakes while taking in the magical mountain views.

Around The Basin have been operating bike hire and bike ride packages on the Queenstown Trail for over 10 years. We have crafted their rides to allow you to access the best parts of the trails and see twice as much by only riding in one direction.

Booking Details:

Bike The Wineries Full Day – (Sep – Apr)
Queenstown, Arrowtown, and the Gibbston Wine Valley

Our Bike The Wineries Full Day ride begins with a shuttle from our shop in Queenstown out to Arrowtown, one of the most scenic settlements in New Zealand. Here we cover mountain bike fitting, navigation tips, and (very importantly) winery information. There’s the opportunity to explore the town – originally a gold-miner’s settlement – and visit one of the cafés, or hop straight onto your bike and get into your morning ride.

The route starts by following the willow-lined Arrow River Bridges Trail to the Kawarau Suspension Bridge, home of the world’s first bungy jump. From there, spend the afternoon biking at your leisure along the Gibbston River Trail, using our winery map to visit as many of the cellar doors linked throughout this easy-riding trail. Enjoy a picnic en-route or lunch at one of the many wineries. The riding distance to the first winery is 15 km, or it’s 25 km to the end of the wine valley.

We will pick you up at 4:30 pm from your winery of choice for the shuttle back to Queenstown.

Adult / Child Tickets:

Child Ticket: 5 – 14 yrs

Start Time: 9:20AM
Duration:
7.5hrs

Restrictions: –

  • To ensure you have an awesome experience at the wineries, it is best to book your tastings and lunch in advance. We can help with timings once you have booked with us.

The wineries are independently owned and operated, so tastings are not included in the price of this package, but average cost is around $10 per winery; some are free!

Arrowtown To Queenstown (Sep – Apr)

The route starts by following the Arrow River Trail downstream to the Morven Ferry, crossing the river via a few spectacular bridges. From there you’ll join the Twin Rivers Trail, which follows the Kawarau and Shotover rivers to the shores of Lake Whakatipu. Expect to see incredible alpine views throughout this section as you traverse the foothills of The Remarkables mountains. The last stage of the journey is a gentle, flowing trail along the lake’s edge, passing a few cafés and even a brewery, before the finish line back at our shop in central Queenstown.

This ride is on wide, gravel trails, graded either 2 or 3 (as shown in the images above). The minimum riding distance is 35 km with a few decent hills. It is recommended for those who are confident and capable riders.

Adult / Child Tickets:

Child : 5 – 14 yrs

Start Time: 8:50AM or 9:50AM
Duration:
full-day

Restrictions: –

  • If you’re feeling fit, there are options to extend this ride – the Kawarau Bungy Bridge, the Tucker Beach Trail, or the Kelvin Peninsula – which can make for an amazing day. However, biking from Arrowtown to Queenstown alone can take some groups over 4 hours to complete. It is the rider’s responsibility to manage their time effectively and make it back to Queenstown before our shop closes at 5 pm.

Arrowtown To Gibbston Valley – (Sep – Apr)
Ride the Arrow River Bridges Trail

This half-day ride package starts with a 25 minute shuttle from our shop in Queenstown out to Arrowtown, one of the most scenic towns in New Zealand. We’ll get you sorted with everything you need before you ride the most popular section of the Queenstown Trail network.

The trail from Arrowtown meanders along the banks of the Arrow and Kawarau rivers. It crosses the rivers via six bridges – including three suspension bridges – and follows the original path used by the gold-miners of the 1800’s. The spectacular river gorges and glacially-carved landscapes provide plenty of photo opportunities.

Once passed the Kawarau Bungy-Jump Bridge, the trail opens up to the majestic Gibbston Wine Valley. The first cellar door in the valley is only a short ride further on. You’ll have time to sample what this world-class wine region has to offer before your return shuttle back to Queenstown.

This ride is easy mountain biking on wide, gravel trails. The trail undulates beside the rivers with a lot of small ‘bumps’, though there are fewer ‘ups’ than there are ‘downs’, as you will be heading downstream. It’s suitable for all riding abilities and a great option for families.

Adult / Child Tickets:
