Long since abandoned after the gold rush, Macetown has now been transformed into a Department of Conservation reserve.
Our new improved tour starts at 8.30am. We visit the Arrowtown Museum to learn about life up the valley, then follow the miners’ old wagon trail and explore the historic gold mining town of Macetown. There is not much left!
Experience up to 25 thrilling river crossings on the way upriver and explore the narrow, rugged road.
The tour includes a walk to Homeward Bound Stamper Battery, a physically spectacular site. This four-storey high stamper battery sits on the Otago hills like a giant coffee grinder! We marvel at the engineering and sheer determination of the original pioneers. Half the gold produced in New Zealand was pounded out of quartz rock in stamper batteries like this.
In late spring / summer the lupins are in bloom which provides stunning photo opportunities.
Our return journey is back along the same route so more excitement and river crossings heading downstream along with some gold panning in the Arrow River before we end our day back at your drop off location.
The tour includes a light lunch, and morning refreshments are included.
