Hugo Tunnel Loop: Queenstown’s Ultimate Backcountry Bike Adventure
The Daring Hugo Tunnel Loop Bike Ride is one of Queenstown’s most rewarding backcountry cycling adventures, combining lakeside cruising, forest climbs, and technical trail riding into one epic loop. Starting from central Queenstown, you’ll roll toward the iconic Boat Shed Café for a pre-ride coffee before following the scenic Frankton Track along the shores of Lake Wakatipu. After crossing the historic Old Shotover Bridge and the impressive Kimi-Ākau Suspension Bridge, the trail begins its steady climb through forested switchbacks toward the dramatic Hugo Tunnel. Expect tight corners, narrow sections, and heart-racing descents before riding through the 108-metre tunnel itself. From Arthurs Point, refuel at a local favourite before enjoying a mostly downhill cruise back to Queenstown to complete this unforgettable alpine loop.
